Learning Outcomes

  • Broad knowledge of Psychology: Demonstrate acquisition of knowledge about the science of psychology in each of the following domains:  research methodology, biopsychology, learning and cognition, developmental psychology, sociocultural psychology, and clinical psychology.

  • Writing: Write an APA compliant paper that fulfills a prompt from a writing intensive psychology course.

  • Ethics: Demonstrate knowledge of ethical principles and ethical reasoning.  

  • Professional Readiness: Demonstrate knowledge and skills about ways to collaborate effectively on a team project as one facet of their readiness to function in a professional context. 

  • Research Methodology: Demonstrate knowledge and skill designing and interpreting research that address a question relevant to psychology.

Program Requirements

Program Requirements

All students must satisfy a general education requirement consisting of ten (10) courses outside of the major department. The General Education Domain III-B (Perspectives on the Contemporary World) requirement is satisfied through the completion of the Psychology major.

 

Domain Courses (5):
All Psychology majors are required to complete one (1) course in each of the following five (5) domains of psychological knowledge:

Learning and Cognition Domain
Choose one (1) of the following:

Sociocultural Domain
Choose one (1) of the following:

  • All majors will complete three (3) additional upper-level courses from Psychology courses at the 300- and/or 400-level or from Neuroscience at the 300-level. The choice of upper-level courses is up to the student. It is recommended that students consult with their advisors in the selection of upper-level course options.

The following courses are required to complete this minor (5):

PSYC 101 General Psychology

  • Choose four (4) additional Psychology courses which may include the RAMS 101PS First-Year Seminar: Psychological Perspectives. In addition, the neuroscience courses of NEUR 225 Biopsychology, NEUR 348 Cognitive Neuropsychology, NEUR 380 Neuropharmacology, or NEUR 450 Seminar in Neuroscience may also count toward a minor in psychology. However, students that minor in BOTH Psychology AND Neuroscience may only apply ONE course in common beyond PSYC 101 General Psychology to fulfill the minor requirements.

Psychology Honor Society

Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in Psychology, involving more than 890 college and university chapters. Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society. The Society has two primary goals. The first is to provide academic recognition to its inductees through membership. The second goal is to nurture and stimulate excellence in scholarship and professional growth. The national organization provides programs to help achieve these goals, including annual conventions, research award competitions, certificate recognition programs, national and regional chapter awards, and national service projects. The Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research is also dedicated to the publication of student research and is published quarterly.

Psychology Club

The Psychology Club is open to all psychology majors. The club sponsors psychology-related events on campus and holds fundraisers.
